How to use
Enter your current course grade as a percentage. Then set your desired final course grade, either by typing it or clicking one of the preset buttons (90% for an A, 80% for a B, etc.). Finally, enter the weight of your final exam as a percentage of your total grade. Your syllabus will list this, typically between 10% and 50%. The calculator instantly shows the minimum score you need on the final exam to reach your target.
Formula
Examples
Aiming for an A
You have an 85% in the class and want a 90% (A-). The final is worth 40% of your grade. Required score: (90 - 85 × 0.6) / 0.4 = 97.5%. It is tight but doable.
Barely passing
You have a 55% and need a 60% (D-) to pass. The final is worth 30%. Required score: (60 - 55 × 0.7) / 0.3 = 71.7%. A solid C- on the final gets you through.
Already secured
You have a 95% and want a 90%. The final is worth 20%. Required score: (90 - 95 × 0.8) / 0.2 = 70%. You can relax a bit and still hit your target comfortably.
Frequently asked questions
What if the calculator says I need over 100%?
A required grade above 100% means it is mathematically impossible to reach your target with the final exam alone. You may need to check if your instructor offers extra credit, or adjust your goal to a more realistic target. The calculator will show the maximum grade you can achieve with a perfect final.
How do I find the weight of my final exam?
Check your course syllabus. It will list the grading breakdown, for example: homework 20%, midterms 40%, final exam 40%. The final exam percentage is what you enter as the weight. If your syllabus lists points instead of percentages, divide the final exam points by the total course points and multiply by 100.
Does this work for weighted category grading?
This calculator assumes a simple weighted average where the final exam is one component. If your grade has multiple categories (homework, quizzes, midterms), calculate your current weighted average across all non-final categories first, then use that as your current grade.
What if I have multiple remaining assignments, not just a final?
Combine all remaining work into one weight. For example, if you have a final worth 30% and a paper worth 10%, enter 40% as the final weight. The required grade shown is the average you need across all remaining work.
What grade scale does this use?
The calculator uses the standard US letter grade scale: A+ (97+), A (93-96), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C+ (77-79), C (73-76), C- (70-72), D+ (67-69), D (63-66), D- (60-62), F (below 60). Your institution may use a different scale.
